Frequently Asked Questions

For Schools, Students & Parents: Safety, Support, and Daily Life
Your safety and well-being are our top priorities. This section outlines the support systems we have in place.

Safety & Supervision

Who can I contact in Malta in case of an emergency?

Metis staff are available 24/7 for emergencies. Your primary contacts are:
• Glenn Doublesin
• Kathryn Gatesy

How is student safety supervised during the stay?

Each student is supported by their designated School Supervisor. Metis staff provide local support to these supervisors at all times. If a supervisor becomes unavailable, Metis staff will directly step in to ensure continuous student support.

What happens if a student gets sick or needs medical attention?

Upon arrival, students receive a full briefing on emergency procedures and a list of key contacts. For minor issues, local pharmacies are readily available. For more serious concerns, Malta has well-equipped health centres and Mater Dei Hospital. All medical expenses are covered by the student’s EU Medical Insurance.

How do you support students with homesickness or cultural adjustment?

Our programs are designed to be engaging, minimizing downtime. However, our experienced Metis staff are trained to provide discreet emotional support and guidance if students feel uneasy. We foster an environment where students can grow independently, with a strong safety net always in place.

Are the accommodations located in safe areas?

Yes. Students are housed in self-catering shared rooms at selected residences like Sprachcafe or University Hub, located in safe, well-connected areas. Basic amenities are within walking distance, public transport is easily accessible, and the general environment in Malta is considered very safe.

Accommodation & Logistics

What are the living arrangements?
Students stay in self-catering shared accommodation. They receive a daily-needs allowance for groceries and a Tallinja bus card with a companion app for easy travel around the island.
Is Wi-Fi available for study and communication?
Yes, accommodation includes Wi-Fi. Students are also expected to have a smartphone with mobile data to ensure they are always reachable for safety reasons.
How is transportation to the internship handled?
Transportation is supported via the provided Tallinja bus card and app, enabling students to travel independently between their accommodation and internship placement.
Who organizes airport pickup and drop-off?
Metis staff coordinate and oversee all airport transfers to ensure a smooth arrival and departure.

Educational Value

How are internship placements matched to students?
We begin with an interview to understand each student’s interests, skills, and academic goals. We then match them with a suitable placement from our curated network of reputable companies.
Will students receive formal feedback or a certificate?
Yes. As part of the Erasmus+ requirements, students receive documented feedback and a grade for their performance. They are also encouraged to add this valuable experience to their CV and professional portfolio, and we provide guidance on how to do this effectively.

Communication for Parents & Schools

Who should parents or schools contact with concerns?
Communication should be directed through the school’s designated officials. The School Supervisors are the primary points of contact, with Metis providing local support to them.
How are cases of inappropriate behaviour handled?
The student’s School Supervisor is responsible for addressing behavioural issues. Metis may provide guidance, especially if the issue relates to the internship placement itself.

For Host Companies: Internship Program Details
Thank you for your interest in hosting an intern. This section addresses common questions from potential host companies.

Intern Selection & Preparation

How are interns selected and matched with our company?

We carefully match a host company’s needs, industry, and culture with an intern’s academic background, personality, and career interests to ensure a productive and mutually beneficial collaboration.

What level of English can we expect from the interns?

Interns are assessed for English proficiency prior to placement and are expected to have a decent, workable level of communication skills.

What pre-training do interns receive?

Our interns are actively pursuing studies in their chosen field. They arrive with a foundational knowledge relevant to their academic path, and the internship is designed as a formative extension of their studies.

Company Responsibilities & Management

What are the host company's responsibilities?

Host companies are expected to treat interns with the same duty of care as regular employees, including providing a safe work environment, adequate training, and respectful personal treatment.

What is the typical number of working hours per week?

Interns are expected to work between 30-40 hours per week.

What happens if an intern is not performing well?

In the rare case of performance or behavioural issues, Metis will step in to assess the situation and work with all parties to find a suitable resolution.

Are we required to provide any formal documentation?

Yes. At the end of the placement, a company representative is required to review, sign, and grade the intern’s daily work log, which is part of their Erasmus+ documentation.

Financial & Logistical Considerations

Are host companies expected to pay the interns?

No. Internships are funded by the Erasmus+ program, so there is no financial obligation to the host company. Any additional compensation or benefits are entirely at the company’s discretion.

Are there any hidden costs for the host company?

No. All program-related costs are covered by Erasmus+. Any optional additional benefits are at the company’s discretion.

Do we need to provide meals or transport allowances?

No. The Erasmus+ program caters for the interns’ daily needs. Providing additional benefits is optional.

Can we offer a promising intern a long-term position after the program?

Yes. All our interns are EU citizens, so their employment would be governed by standard EU regulations. There are no program restrictions on offering permanent roles.

What are the legal requirements for hosting an intern?

All necessary Erasmus+ requirements and documentation are handled by the sending school and the Erasmus+ program prior to the student’s arrival, simplifying the process for the host company.
